Celebrating & Reflecting! Student Reflection

As an educator I believe student reflection is a very important factor in the learning process. At the end of a project I would have a session such as a lessons learned where the students would reflect on their learning experiences. As part of the lessons learned, I would have a listing of questions such as;
What did you do well? What worked?
What were the things that didn’t turn out so well?
What were some opportunities for improvement?
What would you different?
After specific projects I would include these sessions to help students improve on future projects. At the end of the school year I would have a “project closeout” celebration”. Something similar to what was discussed in chapter 10 regarding planning a celebration. The project celebration would be a great motivator for students to be innovative in their current projects so that they could “show off” at the end of the school year.
In making sure that the reflections re meaningful for the students, I would target the sessions to be student centered, and allow the students to put together their own ideas and thoughts about project improvement. The more they are involved, the more meaningful it should be to them. I would use storyboarding as a technology tool to incorporate and capture summative reflections. Blogs and Podcasts would be useful to reflect on the project throughout.

  1. The project closeout is an excellent idea. Students are motivated by displaying their work to others. They seem to be even more motivated and feel more accomplished when they have finally completed a difficult task or when they've actually done something that they never knew they could do. The element of celebration is great for our students as well as educators.
